This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
Our Music Curriculum is published in the curriculum section of our website. We use Charanga Music Scheme to ensure that children access all aspects of the music national curriculum to a high standard. Children access half an hour of singing with a specialist singing teacher and pianist weekly, then have a half hour session curriculum lesson with their class teacher using Charanga. After a number of years of TVMS delivering music workshops across school to all year groups, teachers are applying their learning from these sessions this year to deliver music to their classes.
All children access our music curriculum, with adaptations made to remove barriers and ensure success. Children have opportunities to play instruments such as glockenspiels in a whole class ensemble across KS2. We work with Tees Valley Music to enhance and support curriculum music across the school. |
Part B: Co-curricular music
This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.
Music Works offer music tuition for children interested in pursuing this outside of the music lesson times. We currently have children learning ukulele and guitar in small group and one-to-one lessons. There is a cost for this service. In some circumstances this has been funded or partially funded for some children through Pupil Premium.
Our specialist singing teacher and pianist run a choir, which is open to all children across KS2 to join with no charge. We have opportunities for them to perform across the year to parents and the rest of school. |
Part C: Musical experiences
This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.
In addition to the weekly singing lessons, there is a whole school singing assembly each month, where the children get to sing in a large group. At Christmas, children from Nursery, Reception and Key Stage One perform to the rest of the school and their parents. In the Spring Term Years 3 and 4 perform a singing showcase and in the Summer Term Years 5 and 6 put on a production, which always involves singing.
The autumn term provides the opportunity for children from Key Stage 2 to visit the theatre to see a pantomime performed by the local sixth form college, with some present pupils and many ex pupils part of the cast. Younger children are also given the opportunity to visit The Arc to see a performance suitable to their age group. Both visits are funded through voluntary donations from parents, with pupil premium used to discount the cost for eligible families. We participate in events run by TVMS and Yarm School across the year, where children spend time rehearsing in school, then meet with others from different schools to result in a performance for parents. These are funded by school. |
In the future
This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.
· We would like to further develop our music offer in the future by:
Initially ensuring staff confidence is high to enable them to deliver high-quality curriculum music lessons across school; Considering further opportunities for children to learn a range of instruments outside of their music lessons and perform for others; Create additional opportunities for children to showcase their learning in music. |

The Department for Education publishes a guide for parents and young people on how they can get involved in music in and out of school, and where they can go to for support beyond the school.
