MFL Long Term Overview

Intent

French at The Glebe Primary School is Enjoyable, Engaging and Exciting! We encourage children to develop confidence and creativity while fostering curiosity and enthusiasm for language learning. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts. Pupils are supported to develop an awareness of cultural differences in French-speaking countries, helping them to gain a wider understanding of the world around them.

Implementation

French is taught to all children in Key Stage 2 in line with the Primary National Curriculum. We follow a whole-school approach to ensure learning is well planned, progressive and inclusive for all pupils.

Children develop the key language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, alongside an understanding of grammar. These skills are practised in a range of meaningful activities so that pupils can use and apply their learning with growing confidence.

Our French curriculum is designed to support all learners, helping children to build secure foundations for future language learning. Pupils are encouraged to recognise similarities and differences between French and English, developing a deeper understanding of how languages work.

Learning about French culture and traditions also plays an important role in our teaching. This helps children to develop respect for other cultures, strengthen their sense of identity and gain a wider understanding of the world around them.

By the time children leave The Glebe Primary School, we aim for them to feel confident, curious and enthusiastic about languages and well prepared for the next stage of their learning.

Impact

Pupils build progressively on their prior knowledge as they move through their foreign language learning journey across the primary phase. Key language is regularly revisited, practised and consolidated to support long-term learning and secure understanding.

Teachers have a clear understanding of the intended learning outcomes and use long-term planning documents to ensure that the correct units are taught at the appropriate stage of the year. This ensures consistency, progression and full curriculum coverage across Key Stage 2. Pupils are expected to make good or better progress in French. Individual progress is monitored through ongoing assessment and is shared with pupils and parents/carers in line with school procedures. If progress is not in line with expectations, this is identified promptly, allowing teachers to provide targeted support or early intervention to address any gaps in the language learning skills.
